Message from Suzy Chandler, President of the Board

Volunteering - it’s what we DO! With the month of April being a nationwide month to celebrate volunteerism, and Volunteer Appreciation Week celebrated April 21-27, we are in awe of the committed volunteers we have! Are our volunteers slowing down at all? Not a chance! Our 200 local volunteers who have been onboarded and trained as NNN volunteers to help their neighbors have already helped over a THOUSAND times this year alone!

  • Have you felt the call to Volunteer, but are worried about the time commitment? Don’t worry, our flexible volunteer schedules fit into everyone’s lifestyles! Volunteer when and how it’s right for you – from a friendly phone call or help wheeling out recycling, to a drive to a crucial medical appointment in Seattle. (It’s always better with a trusted companion when you need to head downtown!) We love to share our camaraderie at our volunteer happy hours as well!

  • If you’re short on time but want to support more volunteers, we’re always thrilled to receive donations in any amount.

  • In May, we’re celebrating Members and Volunteers together at our special May 18th event. (Details below!)

Time’s Almost Up!

Don’t Miss Our 2024 Member & Volunteer Celebration

May 18th, 2024; 1:30-3:30 pm, Laurel Cove Community, Shoreline

By now, we hope you’ve received your postcard invitation to the annual NNN Members’ & Volunteers’ Celebration party (“Par-Tea!”) in the mail and have RSVP’d about whether or not you’re coming! Spaces are still available as of this newsletter’s printing, but you need to register by May 1st so we can save your spot. This year we’re also celebrating NNN’s 5 year anniversary, and this party is just one way for us to join together to recognize all the wonderful members, volunteers and supporters who’ve made our Village possible. We’re having afternoon tea with tasty finger sandwiches and delicious desserts. Members will have a chance to win one of a few raffle prizes, and everyone who attends wearing a fun or fancy hat will be eligible to compete for the “best hat” prize!

If you can’t find your invitation, just go to our website and click on the “Let’s Par-Tea!” event on May 18th. You’ll be able to register at that time if space is still available. Members who need a ride may also request transportation at the time you register on the website.

Recipe of the Month–Southern Style Coleslaw

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of mayonnaise

  • 2 Tbsp dijon mustard

  • 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 3 Tbsp sugar

  • 3/4 tsp kosher salt

  • 1 tsp onion powder or 1 Tbsp finely grated onion

  • 2 tsp celery seeds

  • 1 16 oz bag of coleslaw mix (plain cabbage or tri-color deli style)

Instructions:

  • In a large bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, sugar, salt, onion powder, and celery seeds.

  • Add the shredded cabbage and toss until well coated.

  • Refrigerate for an hour before serving and up to 2 days.

  • Toss again right before serving. Enjoy!

*Note*

This coleslaw can be made in advance. However, it will release more liquid the longer it is stored in the refrigerator. You'll want to drain off some of the excess liquid prior to tossing again and serving.
